The Zenith Care System, a medical center for low-income seniors and people with chronic diseases, is to open next year as part of the Northeast Regional Health Center expansion, Zenith Health officials announced Thursday.
Zenith Health plans to open the new facility at 1225 East Broad Street, at the corner of South Broadway and Washington Street, next year.
It will be the first Zenith Center in the region and the second Zenith facility in the country, the company said in a news release.
The company has more than 50,000 employees in New England, the Northeast and other regions.
The center will be Zenith’s first in the Washington Metropolitan Area, according to the company.
Zenitans are those who are deemed by the company’s founder, Dr. Mark Lutz, to have the highest capacity for living in a community and who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness.
About 100 people were accepted into the new center, which will serve as a community-based primary care clinic, the news release said.
It said the new location will be about half the size of the existing facility, which is located on the second floor of the old facility on West Broad Street.
Zeniths are primarily staffed by physicians, nurses and other medical professionals, who are trained to care for seniors with chronic conditions.
Zenits new location in the heart of the region comes as the region grapples with a surging opioid epidemic.
It is also in the midst of a $1.2 billion expansion of its health care system.
The region has about 12 million people, including 1.2 million seniors, according the region’s Department of Health.
The region has the third-highest number of opioid deaths in the nation, behind New York and Pennsylvania, according data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About 80 percent of those opioid deaths occur in New York, according CDC.
The Zenith Centers for Excellence, which includes Zenith, is focused on the elderly, the elderly and people in chronic illnesses, said Dr. Michael Whelan, who is the senior vice president of health care at Zenith.
Zenitek, the new Zenith center, will be managed by ZenithHealth Partners, a unit of a private investment firm that was founded in 2004 and has a total valuation of $1 billion, according a news summary.
